How to Replace a Shower Head In 5 Minutes : DIY Step-By-Step Guide

Crosswater MPRO Wall Mounted Shower Arm

Why Replace Your Shower Head?

Replacing your shower head is one of the quickest, easiest and most affordable ways to give your bathroom an impactful refresh both visually and physically. Whether you want to improve water pressure, give your bathroom an updated look or simply replace your existing shower head to the same style due to it being worn out and well used, changing a shower head is a simple DIY task that most homeowners can do themselves with very little or no tools at all.

Everyone will have their own reasons for wanting to change and upgrade, but here are some of the most common reasons and signs that it is time to replace your shower head or hand held shower.

1. Low Water Pressure

As time goes on, limescale and mineral build up on your shower head can lead to blocked nozzles which restricts water flow, resulting in weak water pressure or uneven spray. By replacing your shower head (especially with a high pressure model) can instantly improve water pressure and provide an overall better shower experience.

2. Limescale and Wear

Long term use and irregular cleaning of your shower and shower head can make them look dull, stained or clog your nozzles with limescale. If the lack of shine on your shower head is getting you down, then it is time for an upgrade. Modern designs offer easy to clean silicone nozzles that resist build up and are much easier to clean and maintain.

3. Leaks and Dripping

If you often find that your shower head or shower handset is leaking at the connection, this can often mean that internal components or seals are worn down and not working to a high standard. This can be annoying and replacing your shower head is often a quick, easy and cost effective solution.

4. Better Water Efficiency

Bathroom products are constantly changing and evolving, older models may use more water than necessary, by updating to a new water saving shower head, you can help reduce household water consumption while still experiencing excellent shower performance.

5. Outdated Style

You may decide that you no longer like the look of your shower head or have seen one you prefer, luckily it is easy to swap to a new one you like. A simple bathroom upgrade without a full renovation is simple by changing bathroom fixtures from chrome if you prefer brushed brass or to bronze if you want an industrial led design vs a contemporary black bathroom. The choice is yours and you can change your bathroom however you like as finishes and designs evolve, but it doesn't always have to be an expensive upgrade to achieve the look you're after.

Step-By-Step Guide To Change Your Shower Head

Before you commit to changing your shower head, make sure you have this small selection of things available for a smooth installation and to help with your DIY.

What you'll need:

  • Your new shower head
  • PTFE tape (plumbers tape) - optional but ensures a water tight seal
  • An adjustable wrench or spanner
  • An old cloth or towel

The majority of shower heads are designed to fit standard UK fittings, so you won't usually need any specialist tools.

Top Tip: If you're installing a handheld shower, the process is the exact same apart from you'll be attaching it to a shower hose instead of a shower arm. So no need to go searching for a separate how to guide.

Step 1: Turn Off Your Shower

While you don't need to turn off the water to the whole house for this installation, we do recommend you turn off your shower unless you want to get wet during the process.

Step 2: Remove Your Old Shower Head

Hold the shower arm firmly with one hand while you unscrew your old shower head or handset anti-clockwise with your other hand. Once removed, check for any left over washers or old tape on the threads and remove them.

Tip: If it feels tight and wont budge, wrap a dry cloth around the connection nut to protect your shower arm, and use an adjustable wrench to gently loosen it.

Step 3: Clean The Threads

There may be left over residue and build up on your shower arm or shower hose threads, leaving this there will affect the water tight seal and lead to the new fitting wearing down quicker. Before installing your new shower head, use a cloth to clean the exposed threads and remove any old PTFE tape, debris or limescale to ensure a clean seal.

Step 4: Apply PTFE Tape

Although this step is optional, if you want to ensure a water tight connection and long lasting quality, we recommend you apply PTFE tape - also known as plumbers tape - around the threads of your shower arm or shower hose. Wrap the tape around 3-5 times in a clockwise direction, this will be the same direction that your shower head will screw on to help prevent leaks.

Step 5: Attach Your New Shower Head

Take your new shower head and screw it into your shower arm or hose by turning it clockwise, you want it tightened firmly but not overtightened as this can damage the fitting or seal. Start by tightening with your hand and then you can use a wrench to gently secure it.

Step 6: Check For Leaks

Once you've completed the installation, you'll want to check for leaks to ensure the connection is secure before you put your tools away. Turn on the shower slowly and check the connection point, if you notice a leak it could simply be that it isn't tightened enough or not enough PTFE tape was used. Tighten the shower head a little bit more and if leaking continues we recommend you remove the shower head and apply some more PTFE tape, this should fix the problem.

Choosing The Right Shower Head

If you've decided it is the right time to replace your shower head, you may be lost with what seems like an endless selection of shower heads to choose from. Replacing your shower head isn't just about fixing a problem, it is also an opportunity to enhance your daily routine and upgrade your bathrooms style, here are some key factors to consider before making a new purchase.

1. Fixed or Handheld?

Fixed shower heads are mounted directly onto your bathroom wall or ceiling and require a shower arm to attach to, they offer a contemporary and streamlined look ideal for minimalist bathrooms. Whereas a handheld shower head attaches to a flexible hose, giving you control and versatility. These are practical for family bathrooms because they allow you to clean the bath or shower with ease and also makes washing hair easier too. If you have a dog, these showers also help with showering your dog after a muddy walk.

Some homeowners choose a dual setup with both of these showering options to maximise their showers potential.

2. Spray Patterns and Features

Whether you're upgrading a family bathroom or designing your dream spa-inspired retreat, an important thing you need to consider would be what features you want from your shower head for the ultimate experience. Many modern shower heads often come with multiple spray settings, some of these include:

  • Rainfall
  • Massage
  • Mist
  • Combination spray

Check individual features in a products description before your purchase to find out what is available.

3. Finish and Style

Here at UK Bathroom Store we have a wide range of finishes and styles of shower heads to complement all bathrooms. Whether you want to match the rest of your bathroom fixtures or prefer to mix your brassware, we have the one for you.

Some of our most popular finishes include:

Coordinating your shower head with your taps, handles and accessories creates a cohesive and high end look.

4. Water Pressure Compatibility and Water Efficiency

If you have a lower water pressure, you might want to look for models specifically designed to enhance flow and deliver a stronger spray. High pressure and boost functions can help to improve performance without increasing your water bill. Not every shower head will perform the same under different water systems so this is something to keep in mind.

Something else you may want to think about is if reducing water consumption is important to you. If so, then consider a water saving shower head. Many modern designs provide a strong pressure while using fewer litres per minute - helping to lower both water usage and energy bills.
