How to Easily Remove and Replace a Toilet Seat

Toilet seat replacement guide

Toilet Seat Removal and Replacement Guide

A quick and easy bathroom upgrade anyone can make is the simple replacement of your toilet seat. This might sound like a tricky DIY, but it actually doesn't require any special skills. A sparkling clean seat makes every bathroom break a little better, so we've made you a step-by-step guide on how to remove and replace your toilet seat for if you've decided to purchase a new upgrade.

While the majority of standard toilet seats are a pretty universal fit, always measure your toilet to make sure you buy the right size and also check the type of seat and toilet design - some seats need compatible models (especially quick-release, soft-close or bidet seats).

What tools do I need to replace a toilet seat?

Lets start with the basics.

Before we start, lets check you have all the tools you might need to carry out this DIY effectively. But don't panic, they're pretty simple and the majority of home owners probably have these lying around in their garage, shed or under the kitchen sink. Some toilet seats will come with everything you need to carry out the complete operation, but you may also need some things yourself.

  1. Protective gloves to keep your hands clean.
  2. Adjustable wrench or pliers.
  3. Screwdriver, flathead or Phillips depending on your seat.
  4.  Cleaning solution (you may as well have a deep clean while you're at it).
  5. Toilet (because you need one of those to fit it to) & toilet seat (obviously).

Step 1: Remove the old toilet seat

Start by lifting the old seats lid. At the back you should be able to see two bolts holding it all in place - sometimes these can be hidden under plastic caps.

  1. Pop open any bolt covers if necessary using a flat head screwdriver.
  2. Once you've removed the cover and revealed the nuts, hold the nut in place with one hand by using your pliers and unscrew the bolts using a screwdriver.
  3. Once both bolts are removed, simply lift the old seat away.

Some toilet seats are held together slightly differently but all work and can be removed in pretty much the same way.

Tip: If your bolts are rusty or stuck, try applying a bit of WD-40 or gently using the pliers to loosen them. Old toilet seats can be tricker to remove but don't give up too easily.

Step 2: Clean the area

Before fitting the new seat, take a moment to clean the rim and bolt holes. Removing dust, grime or residue ensures a smooth installation and keeps your new seat looking fresh.

Step 3: Fit your new toilet seat

Now the old toilet seat has been successfully removed and your toilet is looking and smelling fresh like the day you bought it, it's time to install the new one. Make sure you have the manufacturers guide to hand for if you're struggling and to ensure you have all the fittings provided.

  1. Position the new seat - Place your new toilet seat on the bowl and align the holes that are on the seat with the holes on your toilet. Check that everything is straight and centred.
  2. Secure the bolts - Insert new bolts through the holes and screw the nuts on underneath the toilet. Hand tighten first, then gently use a wrench to tighten further. Avoid over tightening as too much pressure can crack the toilet or seat, you might also need to adjust its position once you've fitted it.
  3. Check alignment and comfort - Close the lid on your new toilet seat and make sure everything sits evenly. Open and close it a few times to ensure it moves smoothly and feels secure.

See below for an example of what your guide might look like and some fittings that might be provided.

Note: this is an example guide for a quick release toilet seat, every toilet seat guide will differ based on its features if it has any.
