Diverter Showers allow you operate multiple outlets in your bathroom from the same point.
You can operate an overhead shower head but then at a turn of a knob operate a hand held shower head. If you go for the even more advanced options you can fill the bath from the same valve using a contemporary overflow bath filler, this allows the bath to be filled from the overflow on the bath using the mixed water from the shower valve.
